First Steam-generation Unit Installed on Nuclear-powered Icebreaker Arktika

September 4, 2016

United Shipbuilding Corporation informed the installation of the first of the two steam generating unit (PHB), which is part of the reactor facility RITM-200.

According to the company this first steam generating unit has been installed in the "Arctic" on September 2 and was loaded onto the parent nuclear icebreaker "Arktika" Project 22220.

RITM-200 is a two-reactor plant designed by OKBM especially for the icebreaking fleet. It is part of the main power plant powered icebreaker and includes two steam-generating unit of thermal capacity of 175 MW each.

The weight of one of the steam generating unit RU RITM-200 is about 180 tons, their loading on the "Arctic" was carried out by the swimming "Demag" crane. Installation of the second PHB to be held within a month.

"The uniqueness of the head of the atomic icebreaker project 22220 makes us decide for the duration of the construction of the difficult technological problems," said General Director of the Baltic Shipbuilding Factory Alexey Kadilov. This is especially true of such complex operations as the installation of the reactor facility - the "heart" of the atomic icebreaker. For the Baltic plant - an additional experience, we multiply our knowledge in the field of nuclear shipbuilding."

June 16, 2016 the body of the head of the atomic icebreaker "Arktika" was officially launched. Completion of the nuclear-powered icebreaker continues on the water, and two Project 22220 icebreaker "Sibir" built on the slipway and "Ural".

Head atomic icebreaker project 22220 is based on the class of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) on the Baltic Shipbuilding Plant, commissioned by the "State Corporation" Rosatom "(laying vessel was held November 5, 2013) and will become the largest and most powerful nuclear icebreaker in the world.

The main characteristics of the ship:

Power - 60 MW (the shafts)
Speed - 22 knots (for clean water)
Length - 173.3 m (160 m KWL)
Width - 34 m (33 m at KVL)
Height - 15.2 m
Draft - 10.5 m / 8.65 m
Maximum ice passability - 2.8 m
Full displacement - 33,540 tons
Assigned service life - 40 years

The icebreaker is equipped with a two-reactor power plant with the main source of the vapor from the reactor installation of the new generation RITM-200 capacity of 175 MW, specially developed for this vessel.

Technical design nuclear-powered submarine was developed CDB "Iceberg" in 2009. Double-draft ship design will allow it to use in Arctic waters, and in the mouths of rivers polar. Icebreaker will work in the western region of the Arctic: the Barents, Pechora and Kara Seas, as well as a more shallow areas the mouth of the Yenisei and Ob Bay area.
