Geothermal energy comes from heated water or steam within the earth and provides a renewable source of energy to heat buildings and generate electricity. But many geothermal reservoirs also have an inherent problem – geological fractures that allow water to divert into other areas, cooling the water and the surrounding rock and limiting the efficiency of heat extraction from underground reservoirs. Researchers at Missouri University of Science and Technology are working on a solution.“We’re developing cost-effective polymer gels that can be injected into geothermal reservoirs to control the diversion problem…

A Boost for UK Offshore Drilling? DW Monday Muses

Drilling activity offshore UK is now expected to increase over the next few years as government and industry reacts to the recommendations in Sir Ian Wood’s report – the “Wood Review” – to maximise UK offshore oil & gas recovery advises Douglas Westwood's 'DW Monday' study. From a peak of 396 in 1996, numbers of wells drilled offshore UK fell to 164 in 2013, a low not seen since 1979. Development wells were down from 289 in 1998 to 120 in 2013. Exploration & appraisal drilling, on which offshore production ultimately depends, saw numbers fall from 224 in 1990 to 44 last year.

Water Flows and Energy Grows

The Earth stores and preserves its resources for the future, and some of the Earth’s freshwater resources are kept in aquifers, underground, water-bearing rock formations that provide groundwater to wells and springs. The USGS Groundwater Resources Program studies the major aquifers across the Nation that includes assessments of groundwater availability and quality. The Williston Basin, a large sedimentary basin located in the north-central United States and south-central Canada, is home to several regional aquifers containing limited groundwater resources with little to no recharge.
