Shale Gas Tech on Display in Aberdeen
New technologies designed to support the development of shale gas reservoirs in the U.K. will be on display at Unconventional Gas Aberdeen 2014 this month.
Major service companies Schlumberger (SLB) and Halliburton are among the exhibitors that will be showcasing technologies focused on direction drilling, reservoir characterization, cementing and stimulation at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 25 and 26 March.
The equipment on show tackles a range of issues including well placement, reservoir optimization and well integrity to enable the cost effective production of shale gas in the UK.
Jorgen Berg, Director of Industry Affairs & Business Development at Schlumberger said: “Technology will play a major part in the future of the U.K.’s development of the unconventional industry, and innovation and application of these are paramount to the success going forward. Technology and efficiency improvements can lead to significant reductions in operational impacts, whilst at the same time optimizing the drilling and reservoir investment and minimizing the down-hole exposures.”
Delegates at the event will hear about the role of technology in reducing land use and community impacts whilst enabling safe production of a gas resource that can support the U.K.’s energy security and reduce dependence on imported gas.
Matt Betts, U.K. Vice President at Halliburton said, “The key to successfully developing our unconventional gas reserves requires a holistic approach around understanding the geology and reservoir from a macro and micro perspective. This involves maximizing production throughout the well and field life cycle, effectively utilizing unconventional hydrocarbon technologies and driving efficiencies throughout the process and adopting environmental solutions.”
The aim of the industry led conference is to highlight barriers to development and present practical solutions based on academic research or experience from energy or related industries.
Dan Byles, MP and leader of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Unconventional Oil and Gas (APPG UG), will address hundreds of delegates. He will be joined by Duarte Figueira, head of the Office of Unconventional Gas and Oil at the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) and Ken Cronin, CEO of the UK Onshore Operators’ Group.
A number of operators will give their views including Andrew Austin, CEO of IGas Energy and Douglas Bain, U.K. Country Manager of Dart Energy.
High profile scientist and Horizon presenter Professor Iain Stewart will be speaking about the need to better communicate the science associated with shale gas at a special academic showcase that will highlight the work of U.K. students.
Unconventional Gas Aberdeen 2014 will focus on themes such as supply chain, technology, planning, and the social license to operate. The meeting is supported by sponsors ASCO, Halliburton, Schlumberger, Corpro, Chevron (CVX), Bond Dickinson and Weir Group (42W.SG).
