Russia offers crude oil and LNG to Vietnam
The two countries announced on Wednesday that Russia was willing to assist Vietnam in developing its nuclear energy sector, and supply it with crude oil as well as LNG.
Vietnam and Russia have also agreed to continue facilitating oil and gas projects in each other's continental shelves. This was revealed by a joint announcement made during the visit of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to Hanoi.
Russia signed a nuclear agreement and several agreements of cooperation with Vietnam on Tuesday. Vietnam is looking to restart its nuclear program after years of suspension.
Pham Minh Chinh, the Vietnamese Prime Minister, said on Wednesday that he wanted to build the first nuclear power station in his country by 2030.
Rosatom, a Russian company, was selected to build the first nuclear power station in Vietnam's central province of Ninh Thuan.
Officials have confirmed that Vietnam has discussed modern, small nuclear reactors with several countries, including South Korea and Canada.
Vietnam is one of Russia's most important partners in Asia. Their relationship dates back to the Soviet period, and has focused on energy and weapons.
The Communist-run Vietnam has close relations with Moscow and Washington, as well as Beijing.
The statement stated that "the two sides recognized Russia's supply of oil, liquefied gas, and processed products, to Vietnam, as well as the development of new energy projects, including projects for renewable energy." (Reporting and editing by Martin Petty; Khanh Vu)
