Keppel hands over Runcorn Energy-from-Waste Facility Phase 2

May 18, 2015

Keppel Seghers Belgium N.V. and Keppel Seghers UK Limited (collectively, Keppel Seghers) have handed over Phase 2 of the Runcorn Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility, in the UK, to the client.

Runcorn EfW comprises two phases of equal capacity. Phase 1 is owned by INEOS Runcorn (TPS) Limited (TPSCo), a joint venture between INEOS, Viridor and John Laing. Phase 2 is owned by Viridor EfW (Runcorn) Limited, a special purpose vehicle owned by Viridor Waste Management Limited.

Keppel Seghers handed over Phase 2 to the client on 24 April 2015 after successfully completing a 30-day reliability test. Earlier this year on 18 January 2015, Phase 1 was completed and was handed over. Both phases are operated by Viridor.

The combined first and second phases are able to process up to 850,000 tonnes of refuse derived fuel (RDF) per annum, converting it into renewable energy comprising approximately 80 MW of electricity and 52 MW of thermal energy in the form of steam. The plant supplies the neighbouring INEOS chemicals manufacturing facility with green energy, reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.

Mr Tan Boon Leng, Executive Director (Waste-to-Energy) of Keppel Infrastructure, the parent company of Keppel Seghers, said, "We are happy to see the realisation of this landmark project as it confirms once again Keppel Seghers' position in the market for its capability in delivering one of the most energy-efficient and world class Energy-from-Waste facilities."

Phil Piddington, Chief Operating Officer of Viridor's Energy Division, added, "We are pleased to have now taken over as the sole operator of this flagship North West energy recovery facility. I would like to thank our contractors, technology partners, and our direct employees in Runcorn, who have all worked hard to get to this point."

Servicing the North West region, Runcorn EfW will provide a waste solution for businesses and local authorities, including helping to achieve Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority's target of 75% landfill diversion.

Runcorn EfW features Keppel Seghers' proprietary technologies, including water-cooled multi-stage grates, boiler, and double dry flue gas treatment system that treats emissions to the highest standards, ensuring full compliance with EU and local air quality requirements.
