India announces a formula for classifying green metal

December 12, 2024

India's Steel Ministry announced on Thursday a formula to define 'green steel', classifying it into three categories based upon the amount of carbon emissions produced per metric ton of the alloy.

A presentation by the Ministry of Steel in New Delhi revealed that "green steel" is steel with carbon dioxide emissions less than 2.2 tonnes per tonne.

Steel with emissions less than 1.6 tonnes per ton of alloy will be classified as "five star green-rated steel", the cleanest among the three.

Steel produced with emissions of between 2 and 2.2 tonnes per ton of alloy will be classified "three-star green steel", the least clean.

A government document revealed that this threshold limit will be re-evaluated every three years.

India, which is the second largest steel producer in the world after China, has developed a green policy to reduce carbon emissions from the production and procurement of this key building material.

India's Narendra Modi set a target of 2070 for the achievement of net zero emissions.

Sandeep Poundrik, the steel secretary, said at an event that the country was also considering mandating "green steel" for government projects. Reporting by Neha Mukherjee and Hritam Arora, both in New Delhi; editing by Savio D’Souza and Varun H. K.
