According to the official Xinhua News Agency, President Xi Jinping stated on Wednesday that China's efforts to combat climate change would not be slowed down despite political developments around the world.

Xinhua reports that Xi spoke at a video conference organized by the United Nations, Brazil and other countries to discuss climate changes and "just energy transformation".

"History will always progress in unexpected ways, even though some countries have a strong preference for unilateralism and protectionionism. This has had a severe impact on international rules and order," Xi stated.

He added, "The more chaotic and turbulent the international situation becomes, the more we must firmly uphold the United Nations as the core of the international system."

Xi didn't mention the United States directly, which is embroiled in a bitter trade war with China under President Donald Trump and has been trying to increase fossil fuel production.

Brazil is hosting the COP30 Climate Change Negotiations this year and hopes to convince China, the largest energy consumer and greenhouse gas emitter in the world, to make stronger commitments to reduce its emissions.

Only a few countries have yet to release their "nationally determined contribution" (NDC) for 2035. Xi announced that China would announce their new goals in advance of the climate talks in Belem, Portugal in November.

China has said that its climate goals are dependent on its own capabilities and requirements.
