German spot power rates drop due to stronger wind forecast

October 11, 2024

German wholesale spot electricity prices fell on Friday morning after rising the day before, as it was anticipated that a higher forecast wind output would dampen demand for power plants.

LSEG data revealed that the day-ahead German contract dropped by 23,15 euros to 65,25 euros per Megawatt Hour (MWh) at 0830 GMT.

The Sunday price dropped from 13.50 euros/MWh to 51.10 euros, the lowest since April.

The German wind power will be much stronger this weekend than it was previously.

"Especially on Sunday the wind power production surges, and is expected at its maximum around noon. This coincides with a solar power peak and creates a very negative situation, with residual load for several hours, said Guromarie Wyller, LSEG's power analyst.

The German wind energy output will rise to an average daily of 39 gigawatt hours per hour (GWh/h). It could peak at around noon and exceed 46.2 GWh/h.

On Monday however, it is expected that wind power will again fall to low levels.

The French day-ahead power market had not yet traded, but offers and bids were at 58.50 euros/MWh. This is a significant drop from the settlement price of 80.50 euro/MWh.

The wind output in France will also be falling.

The French baseload for 2025 increased by 0.55 euros to 74.85 Euro/MWh.

The benchmark EU carbon prices was 0.82 euros lower at 64.18 Euros per metric ton.
