NMA Prohibits CO2 Firefighting on MODU's
Statutory Alert: The Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) has updated Regulation No.227 on precautionary measures against fire and explosion on mobile offshore units, with effect from 1 January, 2015. Section 10.2.1 prohibits using carbon dioxide or other gases which are toxic to humans in the concentrations necessary to extinguish fires in machinery spaces and other spaces of high fire risk. foreign-registered mobile offshore units requiring a Letter of Compliance (LOC).
Noble Pleads Guilty to Enviro Charges Surrounding Kulluk
Noble Drilling (U.S.) LLC was charged with environmental and maritime crimes for operating the drill ship Noble Discoverer and the drilling unit Kulluk in violation of federal law in Alaska in 2012, the Department of Justice announced. Under the terms of a plea agreement filed in federal court today, Noble will plead guilty to eight felony offenses, pay $12.2 million dollars in fines and community service payments…
Increased Safety With Mandatory Weighing Of Containers
Last week, the IMO approved international regulations ensuring the weighing of containers before their carriage by sea. The provisions will increase safety, contribute to preventing accidents and prevent loss of containers over board. For several years, Denmark has worked to acquire better weight data about containers carried at sea. Denmark was also one of the promoters of the new, stricter regulations. It is a milestone that the IMO has now approved international SOLAS regulations.
Second Modular Capture Vessel for US Operation
Drydocks World announced the completion and delivery of Eagle Louisiana, the second of two Modular Capture Vessels (MCV) for the U.S. The first MCV, Eagle Texas, sailed away from Drydocks World’s yard in August last year. The vessels are the world’s first MCVs. Drydocks World converted the AFRAmax tanker for AET, a global leader in petroleum shipping, which has a 20-year agreement with Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) for the operation of the MCVs.
