McDonald Takes the Helm at OPITO
Global safety, standards and workforce development organization OPITO has appointed John McDonald as CEO as the organization seeks to further drive the international skills agenda for the oil and gas industry. McDonald has been Interim CEO since January and was previously U.K. managing director for OPITO after joining the organization in 2012. The appointment comes after an external and internal recruitment process following the sudden death of former CEO David Doig earlier this year. John Taylor, chairman of OPITO today welcomed McDonald to the role.

OPITO, a global oil and gas industry skills, standards and workforce development organization, is deeply saddened to confirm the death of its chief executive David Doig. Mr Doig, 57, who was based in Dubai, suffered a heart attack on December 31st and later passed away peacefully in hospital in Fife, Scotland. Brunei Oil Industry Secures World-first Safety Standard
Brunei has become the first country in the world to commission International Minimum Industry Standard Training (IMIST), reaffirming its strong commitment towards ensuring the safety of its 20,000-strong oil and gas industry workforce. Following the Bruneian government’s undertaking to put around 3,000 front line worksite supervisors through the OPITO global standard for health and safety training earlier this year, the country has now set a deadline of November 2017 to roll IMIST out to people in this role.

Global O&G Safety Conference Moving to Malaysia
Organizers of the world’s only conference focused on safety and competency in the oil and gas industry have announced this year’s event is moving from the Middle East to Malaysia. The seventh annual OPITO Safety and Competence Conference - OSCC 2016 - will take place in Kuala Lumpur on November 16. The one-day event is expected to attract over international 450 delegates and 30 exhibitors. OPITO is to play a major role in helping Cyprus to become a regional centre of technical excellence for oil and gas in the Eastern Mediterranean. Program Underway to Train Iraqi O&G Workforce
Shell and OPITO commit to the safety of 15,000 from the Iraqi workforce with New Training Centre and Standards. Up to 15,000 Iraqi oil and gas workers will be trained in how to deal safely with the potential hazards of hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Shell and oil and gas training standards body, OPITO, have joined forces to ensure workers are trained to the globally recognized H2S standard. A corrosive and hazardous gas, also known as “sour gas”, H2S occurs in the production of oil and gas fields which have a high content of this gas in their reservoirs.
