In less than two weeks’ time, around 500 oil and gas professionals from around the world will meet in Malaysia to discuss whether current thinking and practices used by the sector to ensure the safety of its workforce are fit for today’s new industry landscape as well as the future.
The 2016 OPITO Safety & Competency Conference (OSCC), staged with official event partner PETRONAS, will take place at The Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday, November 16th. The one-day, free to attend, event will see delegates explore and share views on how the global industry sets its standards, trains people and assesses competence levels. It will also look at what is being done to ensure industry has the skills it needs for the coming decades.
High-profile speakers include renowned business innovator Hamish Taylor, New Zealand psychologist Ross Gilmour; executive director of the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) Gordon Ballard; and John Christian, Asia Pacific corporate HSE lead for Technip Malaysia. Other speakers include Simon Durkin, managing director for Sarawak Shell Berhad and Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Limited; and Robert Morgan, chairman of global digital learning technologies leader Atlas Knowledge Group.
Through presentations and debates, they will discuss technological advances in the way people learn as well as proactive steps to consider for the future, the challenges of enhancing existing safety behaviours and culture; and the delivery of safety training and competence standards.
This is the first time the annual event is being held outside the Middle East. OPITO Group chief executive officer David Doig said: “OSCC has become an important forum in the oil and gas calendar. It gives participants an opportunity to hear the latest developments and thinking around the safety and competency of the global workforce from some of the industry’s most senior figures, as well as valuable insights from high profile international speakers who have affected radical change in organisations out with the oil and gas sector.
“At a time when the downturn has seen significant changes to energy companies around the globe, we are pleased the strong support shown for this year’s OSCC demonstrates that the safety of the workforce remains the top priority.
“As the only event of its kind in the world, OSCC attracts a diverse international audience every year. Moving the conference to Kuala Lumpur has opened the conversation up further to industry in the surrounding region and we look forward to everyone participating in helping to shape positive changes that allow oil and gas to be a safe and competent industry which is fit for the new future it faces.”
