The Strategic Sealift Officer (SSO) is a Navy Reservist who posses expertise in maritime sciences and works in the maritime industry as a civilian. This program, previously titles the Merchant Marine Reserve (MMR) provides individuals who can effectively work as a liaison between the US Navy and the Merchant Navy in a time of war.
