My career in transportation began before I attained a M.S. in International Transportation Management. As a ship agent, I always understood the importance in ensuring optimal utilization of facility and human resources to streamline daily operations between; port agencies, contractors and union workers. During hurricane Sandy, I was an On-scene Coordinator when re-opening the Port of New York was critical. I managed an emergency response team at sea and on shore; delegating the crew to areas of priority.   • Charted and navigated vessel over 3,000 miles monitoring weather, fuel and general safety of crew while underway.

Assistant Security Officer

  • Trusted to secure over 600 passports belonging to crew and cadets between 6 domestic and foreign ports.
  • Provided notice of arrival, bill of entry, crew and passenger list to customs officials upon arrival in foreign port.
  • Worked alongside the Vessel Security Officer to ensure appropriate security measures are maintained and the Vessel Security Plan in implemented throughout the ship.

Petty Officer 3 Class- December 10 2012 to March 28 2015

Inventory Accountability Specialist

  • Spearheaded a database that inventoried 3 storage yards with over 70 buoys in each averaging between $444- $10,200 per buoy as well as multiple barrels of chain. The implementation of this program saved the unit $85,000 in hardware and earned me the title of Sailor of the Quarter.

Navigations Petty officer

  • Maintained over 16 charts along coastal New England to Chesapeake Bay, VA keeping abreast with weekly Light List Corrections, Notice to Mariners and Coast Pilot updates electronically and on paper.
  • Administered the upkeep of more than 489 Federal and 1200 Private Aids to Navigation from Montauk Point, NY to the Port of New York documenting by Light List Number; discrepancies, maintenance and relocations.

Rigging Petty Officer

  • Accounted for the tedious logging and routine servicing shore side of 3 carry deck cranes, 3 forklifts and 3 Coast Guard Small Boasts; with a davit on the trailerable 26’, the a- frame on the 45’ and 49’ Buoy Utility Stern Loading Vessels, not to exclude all lifting apparatus.
  • Revamped the Registry of Lifting Appliances in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Surface Force Logistics Center standards earning my unit the Kimble Award during the Ready for Operations Inspection.
  • Instructed and supervised 20 personnel daily on safe practices when working on the buoy deck and around industrial load lifting equipment.

Rescue and Survival Petty Officer

  • Invested 10 hrs. per week accounting for and inspecting rescue and survival equipment, gear and pyrotechnics.
  • Recommended monthly training where proper techniques were exhibiting on dawning and care of personal protective equipment directly resulting in 40% fewer purchases of gear.
  • Ensured crew’s anti-exposure coveralls were in exceptional condition while working through New England’s 2014 severe nor’easter where 51 Aids to Navigation were reported discrepant and unit subsequently received the Andy James Award for Mission Excellence.  

Buoy Deck Supervisor

  • Supervised numerous riggers working on deck during hazardous evolutions including running chain and load bearing wire ropes while dealing with unpredictable sea state keeping safety of the crew as the top priority.
  • Preemptively administered safety checks to lifting and load bearing equipment as well as provided crew members with task direction to insure a seamless evolution.

Communications Watchstander

  • First line of contact for unit via telephone and VHF radio traffic, monitoring multiple frequencies simultaneously and responding to persons in distress assuring that critical line of communication during search and rescue operations remains open.
  • Persistently performed routine and daily maintenance performance procedures on 8 vessels, equipment and facility to ensure mission ready status and security.

Boat Crew Member

  • Over 2000 hrs. served as a qualified boat crew member on 8 vessel platforms ranging from 49’- 20’ has allowed me to master my knowledge as helmsman, look out, surface swimmer, damage controls man and basic first aid responder.
  • Responded to several search and rescue cases more notably an over tuned vessel in the vicinity of Bogue Inlet North Carolina where 3 persons were stranded and injured.

Boarding Officer

  • Patrolled federal and state waterways executed over 750 boarding’s on fishing, commercial and private vessels. Wrote case reports on incidents encountered while on duty.
  • Worked seamlessly with the local police department conducting random sobriety checks on the waterways and insuring safety regulations were met on recreational vessels. Enforced fishery regulations on commercial trawlers and fishing vessels keeping them in compliance.
