I was briefly Master (2 months) of an offshore supply ship in Brazil before making the decision to come ashore.
1980-1983: System Analyst/General Engineer for J.J. Henry Co and CDI Marine, in Arlington VA. Supported USN contracts for logistics and training document development. Lead engineer for cargo handling equipment layout and design studies for MAINE Class RO-RO to MPS (Maritime Pre-positioning Ship) conversion; support for Sealand SL-7 to Fast Support Ship (T-AKR) contract design development, primarily for cargo handling and fueling at sea equipment. At-sea ship-check and engineering design support on USS NIMITZ aircraft carrier for upcoming shipyard repair work. Concept design support for proposal for auxiliary crane ship (T-ACS) conversions from Ready Reserve Fleet available vessels. Contract design work on AOE-6 Fast Fleet UNREP support ship and DDG-51 destroyer. Prepared SLEP (Service Life Extension Program) design documents for USS FORRESTAL aircraft carrier; most notable was a complete update of the ship's 7- condition heat balance to reflect main and auxiliary machinery updates. During this time period, I took a 10-month sabbatical to attend the University of Alaska - Fairbanks for further engineering studies.
