Workstrings Announces Global Expansion

Posted by June 23, 2015

Workstrings International (Workstrings), a  provider of drilling and tubular handling equipment and a Superior Energy Services company, announced  the completion of global expansion projects in Africa, the U.S. and the U.K.

These expansion projects include relocation and expansion of its Takoradi, Ghana, facility; expansion of inspection amenities at its global headquarters in Broussard, Louisiana; and opening of a purpose-built inspection facility within its Aberdeen, U.K., campus.

Africa Expansion:
Workstrings has relocated and expanded its Takoradi, Ghana, facility. The facility now includes a 6,200 m2 covered warehouse for storage of all assets including tubulars to protect and preserve the life of equipment from local conditions, service and maintenance areas, pressure testing, painting and steam cleaning amenities, small parts stores and downhole tools storage. The warehouse is equipped with an overhead crane, as well as lighting for work during dark hours. The facility also offers 4,820 m2 open land for pipe slinging and bundling.

U.S. Expansion:
Expansion at the Broussard, Louisiana, U.S., global headquarters includes a new return inspection facility equipped with a second full-length ultrasonic testing (FLUT) system to double inspection capacity and to accommodate Range 3 drill pipe and landing string. The site now offers a building exclusively for washing and managing thread protectors, allowing Workstrings to provide best-in-class service for keeping protectors clean and functional. The addition of Tuboscope in-house machining services includes two computer numerical controlled (CNC) lathes with additional CNC lathes scheduled for installation during 2015.

An outside diameter (OD) pipe coating facility, completes the Broussard, Louisiana, expansion project. Workstrings has partnered with several customers in the field-testing of various OD coating products to deliver a completion pipe or pipe used in open-water plug and abandon (P&A) work with an OD coating that completely prevents or significantly reduces OD corrosion. The introduction of this technology will eliminate customers’ need to purchase complete strings of pipe, potentially resulting in millions of dollar savings.

U.K. Expansion:
The Aberdeen, U.K., facility offers improved streamlining of its inspection process, increased capacity, accelerated throughput times and enhanced rental product availability in support of customers’ operations in Europe, Former Soviet Union, Middle East and North Africa.

The 927 m2 purpose-built inspection resource features an OD shot blaster, an updated dual internal pipe cleaner, an electromagnetic inspection (EMI) unit and an automated dual head ultrasonic system. These technological advancements are designed to reduce safety risks through automation and elimination of manual tasks. The facility also utilises an economical and environmentally efficient rainwater harvest system for its cleaning units with improved direct pipe bore cleaning, thus enabling a 50 percent reduction in water usage. The building’s construction includes cladding to significantly reduce heat loss and an enclosed cap cleaner to minimize the likelihood of spills. Additionally, Workstrings has replaced its diesel-powered generators and compressors with electricity-powered machinery. The Aberdeen facility renovations pioneer Workstrings’ mission to adhere to the health, safety, environmental and quality (HSEQ) policies set by Superior’s “Target Zero” program, which provides the tools and resources necessary for all Superior companies to improve operational performance while reducing injuries and incidents.

“Workstrings continues to demonstrate commitment to customer support, investment in the latest technologies and environmental awareness,” said Mike Delahoussaye, Workstrings’ U.K. managing director. “The enhancements to these facilities will offer an unrivalled level of quality and service to the oil and gas industry providing improved efficiencies for customers, keener environmental awareness for the community and a safer workplace for employees.”
