What is known about Trump's Executive Orders after the swearing-in?

January 20, 2025

Donald Trump, the U.S. president, issued a series of executive orders on Monday to stamp his mark on his administration. These included directives on immigration and criminal pardons to energy.

The executive orders that have been signed on Monday so far are listed below:

PARDONS

Trump pardoned around 1,500 people on Jan. 6, 2020, who stormed into the U.S. Capitol. This was a massive gesture of support for those who attacked police officers as they attempted to stop lawmakers from certifying Trump's defeat in the 2020 elections.

Trump stated, "We really hope they show up tonight." "We're expecting it."

He announced that six defendants' sentences would be shortened.

IMMIGRATION

Trump signed an order declaring illegal immigration on the U.S. Mexico border as a national crisis, designating criminal cartels terrorist organizations and aiming to give automatic citizenship to U.S. born children of illegal immigrants.

The text of the order was not immediately accessible. Trump also signed another order that is expected to suspend U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program for four months.

ACTIONS OF BIDEN TO BE UNDONE

Trump, at a rally in a sports stadium, revoked executive actions from the previous administration.

Trump said, "I will revoke almost 80 destructive and radical executive decisions of the previous administration."

Trump said that he would sign an executive order ordering all agencies to preserve any records related to "political persecutions" during the Biden administration.

The executive orders that were revoked covered the period from 2021, when former President Joe Biden took office, to last week. They included topics such as COVID relief, equal opportunity for Hispanics, Black Americans and Hispanics, as well as the promotion of clean-energy industries.

HIRE FREEZES REGULATORY

Trump signed an order freezing government hiring, new federal regulations and an order requiring federal employees to return immediately to full-time on-site work.

Trump added that he would "implement an immediate regulation freezing, which will prevent Biden bureaucrats to continue to regulate," adding that he would also "issue a temporarily hiring freeze" to ensure we only hire competent people who are loyal to the American Public.

This move would force a large number of government white-collar employees to give up remote working arrangements. It would reverse a trend which began in the early stages COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump's supporters have claimed that the mandate to return to work is meant to gut the civil service and make it easier for Trump replace government employees with loyalists.

INFLATION

Trump instructed the heads of executive departments and agencies in the United States to provide emergency price relief for the American people, and to increase the prosperity of American workers. The measures include reducing regulations and climate policies which increase costs and prescribing actions to reduce the cost of housing.

The order stated that "over the past four years, the Biden administration's destructive policy has caused an unprecedented inflation crisis for the American people."

CLIMATE

Trump has also signed off on a withdrawal of the Paris Climate Treaty. This includes a letter explaining this withdrawal to the United Nations.

The announcement, which was widely anticipated since Trump's victory in the presidential election on Nov. 5, threatens to undermine the main goal of the agreement, which is to prevent a rise of global temperatures by 1.5 degrees Celsius. This target seems even more tenuous, given that last year marked the hottest year ever recorded.

The order stated that "It is my policy to put the United States of America and the American People first."

He repealed an 2023 memo by Biden which barred oil drilling on 16 million acres of land in the Arctic.

FREE SPEECH

The President signed a document titled "Ending Weaponization of Government against Political Opponents". The order instructs the Attorney General to investigate federal government activities over the past four years. This includes the Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission as well as the Federal Trade Commission under the previous administration.

The government said it will "identify past misconduct on the part of the Federal Government in relation to the weaponization and weaponization by the Intelligence Community and the weaponization and weaponization of Law Enforcement."

ENERGY

Trump declared an energy emergency and promised to replenish strategic oil reserves as well as export U.S. power around the globe.

He said: "We will become a wealthy nation again and the liquid gold beneath our feet will make that happen."

An official in the new administration confirmed that Trump will sign an executive directive focusing on Alaska. The state is critical to the national security of the United States and could permit exports of natural gas liquefied to other areas of the U.S.

According to the White House website, the U.S. will also withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement and stop leasing to wind farms. Trump also said that he would repeal what he called a mandate for electric vehicles.

According to a document obtained by the, members of his team recommend sweeping changes in order to stop supporting EVs, charging stations, and to tighten up measures to block imports of Chinese cars, battery materials, and components.

TARIFFS

Trump did not mention any specific tariff plans during his inaugural speech, but he and his cabinet members said that they would be coming. They will be collected by the new External Revenue Service, which is a newly created agency.

His first-day reprieve indicates a possible more deliberate approach to imposing duties, a topic that has shaken policymakers and investors around the world. This has prompted a relief rallies in global stocks, as well as key foreign currencies against dollars.

Trump, in a draft of a presidential trade memo seen by the reporter, also instructed federal agencies to evaluate China's performance as part of the "Phase 1", or 2020 trade agreement he signed with Beijing to end a two-year trade war.

Beijing did not meet its targets when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

TRANSGENDER AND DIVERSITY RIGHTS

An incoming White House official revealed on Monday that Trump would issue executive orders to cut diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and declare that the U.S. Government will only recognize males and females, and that this cannot be changed.

Officials added that they expect to see more action on DEI programs in the near future.

Trump has also promised to sign an Executive Order ending transgender privileges in the U.S. Military and U.S. Schools.
