Ukraine has the potential to store and buy LNG from US
Ukraine's foreign minister stated on Wednesday that Ukraine and other European countries have the ability to purchase and store liquefied gas (LNG), which is produced by the United States, in Ukraine. This could increase Europe's energy independence as transit routes from Russia are ending.
The Ukraine, which was invaded three years ago by Moscow, was once an important pipeline transit route for Russian Gas until this year when the transit agreement between the two nations expired.
There are also large underground gas storages in the west.
At a press conference held with his British counterpart David Lammy, Andrii Sybiha, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, said: "We see an enormous potential in purchasing LNG gas from America, especially after the end of transit of Russian Gas through the territory of Ukraine."
A ministry spokesperson responded to a post-event question by clarifying that Ukraine can store LNG from other European countries as well as LNG purchased in the United States.
Sybiha stated, "You are aware that Ukraine has underground gas storage facilities with extremely powerful capabilities. Here, too, we can work together for mutually beneficial benefits, strengthening Europe's security of energy."
Sybiha invited U.S. companies to help rebuild Ukraine after nearly three years war.
The minister was responding to a question regarding the recent interest expressed by U.S. president Donald Trump in Ukraine providing critical minerals to the U.S.
In its Victory Plan, presented last year, Kyiv proposed to sign an accord with the U.S. and EU, as well as other allies, that would allow joint investment and use of Ukraine’s natural resources. It claims these are worth trillions.
Sybiha stated that "it is also a way to guarantee the presence of large business, big interests and the interests of the United States of America in developing such fields and protecting them."
