Trump creates Energy Council to promote US oil and gas

February 14, 2025

The administration of President Donald Trump announced on Friday that it had granted a licence to Commonwealth LNG for the export of liquefied gas in Louisiana. This is the first time since former president Joe Biden stopped exports at the beginning of last year.

Exports to Asia and Europe are approved.

Trump signed an executive directive in the Oval Office Friday, creating a new Energy Council to be headed by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. The council will work to increase U.S. oil and gas production. The U.S. already ranks as the largest fossil fuel producer in the world.

Trump also said that after Biden removed them from the discussion, more than 600,000,000 acres of federal offshore waters are now available for oil and gas exploration.

Trump lifted the export freeze the night he was sworn in for the second time.

The company, which is the longest-waiting for a permit, plans to build an export facility in Louisiana that will produce 9.5 million tons of steel per year to be sold to countries without a free trade deal with the U.S.

Cheniere and Energy Transfer are two other LNG companies that have announced their intention to export the fuel.
