Three workers sue Pemex in Texas for injuries

October 14, 2024

On Monday, three workers filed a lawsuit against Mexico's state oil company Pemex in Houston. They claim to have been injured in a release of hydrogen sulfide at a refinery in Deer Park in Texas on Thursday.

According to officials, two contractors died and 35 others were treated on Thursday for exposure to deadly hydrogen-sulfide.

According to the lawsuit, Sergio Antonio Olvera and Jonathan Martinez, as well as Yoselyn soto, were at the Pemex refinery located in Houston's suburb of Deer Park on Thursday evening when hydrogen sulfide was released.

The lawsuit stated that "Plaintiffs sustained injuries as a result of the leak." The lawsuit stated that defendants were negligent at the time of the incident and during the event in question.

In their lawsuit, the three workers alleged that Pemex had failed to monitor, supervise, and maintain the refinery, as well as provide safe working conditions in the plant.

According to the lawsuit, plaintiffs are seeking damages of more than $1 million.

Muhammad Aziz, an attorney in Houston's Harris County District Court, filed the lawsuit.

Aziz has not responded to any messages left at his law firm Monday.

Last week, the law firm of Tony Buzbee, a prominent Houston attorney, posted an announcement that several families had hired his firm to represent their loved ones.

On Monday afternoon, Buzbee’s company did not have a spokesperson available.

According to sources familiar with the plant's operations, the contractors were working on a unit for sulfur recovery when the release of hydrogen sulfide occurred.

Gases such as hydrogen sulfide are produced during crude oil refinement. Inhaling a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide can be fatal. (Reporting and editing by David Gregorio; Erwin Seba)
