Sources say that three DOGE members have raised concerns about access to the US Energy Department.
Two sources confirmed on Friday that members of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency are now working at the U.S. Energy Department, where officials fear they may have access to personal files and information regarding federal grant disbursements.
U.S. Energy Sec. Chris Wright, confirmed by the Senate this week, told CNBC Friday that DOGE members were at the Department and "have the access to look around and talk to people and provide us with some good feedback about how things are progressing."
Wright claimed that they were "friends within Elon's wider circle."
Wright stated that the DOGE members did not have security clearances, and they were not looking into nuclear weapons secrets. The National Nuclear Security Administration of the Department is responsible for maintaining U.S. nuclear weapons and laboratories.
Two sources, a career worker and an ex-official in contact with department workers, confirmed that one DOGE member worked in the office the chief information officer and all three were listed on the email and messaging system of the department.
Sources said that one of the DOGE at the department was Luke Farritor. He is a former SpaceX intern. One source said, "They may or may not be cleared but they certainly seem to have access to secure information." Officials are worried that DOGE members could have access to data from grant and loan systems on energy projects, financial management systems and computer drives.
Uncertain whether they would ever be able to access data from the NNSA was the response of one source.
The Department of Energy didn't immediately respond to our request for comment. Farritor could not be reached. (Reporting and Editing by Marguerita Chy)
