Grid Operator Orders Temporary Cut in Power Consumption in Oslo

Posted by November 20, 2015

Norwegian grid operator Statnett on Friday ordered a temporary reduction of power consumption by industries in Oslo from Sunday to avoid a power outage after a blackout that hit parts of the capital on Wednesday.

The grid operator said the order to reduce consumption by a total 100-300 megawatt (MW) would run until Wednesday.

"That would affect consumers who have flexibility to reduce power consumption from the grid, or to switch to oil or wood pellets (to produce energy)," a Statnett spokeswoman said.

"We are doing so to ensure good power supply as consumption is going to rise due to colder weather. The substation, which failed on Wednesday, is only partly operational."

Hafslund, operator of the distribution grid in Oslo, said it could not say yet which consumers would be affected.

Wednesday's daytime outage left parts of Oslo without lights, including the parliament, and stopped trains and metro. It took about about an hour and a half to fully restore the power supply.
