Germany's PNE wants Vietnam to approve a $4.6 billion offshore wind project

October 23, 2024

Local authorities reported on Wednesday that Germany's PNE AG was seeking the approval of the Vietnamese government for the development of a $4.6 billion offshore wind farm.

The Department of Planning and Investment of Binh Dinh Province in central Vietnam said that if the company is granted a license, it would build a wind farm in the province with a capacity of 2,050 megawatts.

Vietnam wants to increase wind and solar power development. It has set a goal of 6 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2030. However, this target is in danger due to regulatory obstacles.

The department reported that PNE CEO Per Hornung Pedersen had visited the province Tuesday, and worked with the local authorities to find ways of moving the project forward. PNE has been working on the plan since 2019, the department added.

PNE did not immediately respond to an inquiry for comment.

On Wednesday, a senior official from the province, who was not authorized to speak to the media, said that the central government would decide whether to approve or reject the project. (Reporting and editing by John Mair; Khanh Vu)
