U.S. Top Court Hands Chevron Victory in Ecuador Pollution Case

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday handed a victory to Chevron Corp by preventing Ecuadorean villagers and their American lawyer from trying to collect on an $8.65 billion pollution judgment issued against the oil company by a court in Ecuador. The justices turned away an appeal by New York-based lawyer Steven Donziger, who has spent more than to two decades trying to hold Chevron responsible for pollution in the Ecuadorean rain forest, of lower court rulings blocking enforcement in the United States of the 2011 judgment.

Court rejects bid to enforce Ecuador judgment on Chevron Canada

A Toronto court has rejected a bid by Ecuadorian villagers to enforce a judgment in their home country against Chevron Canada Ltd, ruling the subsidiary is not liable for parent Chevron Corp, the U.S. oil major said on Friday. A Canadian lawyer for the villagers in the environment-damage lawsuit said the ruling is "not a modern-day view," and that an appeal will be filed. A federal appeals court on Monday blocked the enforcement of a more than $8.6 billion pollution judgment obtained in Ecuador against Chevron Corp , letting stand a lower court ruling that said an American lawyer used "corrupt means" to win the award. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan rejected efforts by the lawyer Steven Donziger and representatives of residents of Ecuador's Lago Agrio region to enforce the judgment. They sought to hold Chevron responsible for water and soil contamination supposedly caused from 1964 to 1992 by Texaco, which Chevron acquired in 2001.

Gibraltar Court Awards Chevron $28 Mln in Damages

Chevron Corp won $28 million in damages after Gibraltar's highest court ruled against a company that was set up to receive and distribute funds resulting from a judgment against Chevron in Ecuador. Gibraltar-based Amazonia Recovery Ltd was set up by Steven Donziger, a U.S. lawyer who represented a group of Ecuadorians that sued the oil giant. Chevron is contesting a $9.5 billion judgment from the suit in Ecuador. It is also suing Donziger and others in federal court in Manhattan, claiming the judgment was the product of a fraud.

H5 Settles With Chevron Over Ecuadorian Lawsuit

Chevron Corporation has reached a settlement agreement with H5, a California-based e-discovery and litigation services firm. In the settlement, H5 has withdrawn its support from the litigation against Chevron in Ecuador and has assigned its 1.25 percent interest in the $9.5 billion Ecuadorian judgment to Chevron. Another Key Funder of Fraudulent lawsuit Against Chevron Withdraws Support

Chevron Corporation has reached a settlement agreement with Woodsford Litigation Funding Limited, a U.K.-based litigation funder that provided $2.5 million in funding to the fraudulent lawsuit against Chevron in Ecuador. Chevron brought conspiracy claims against Woodsford in Gibraltar for the company’s role in funding and advancing the fraudulent lawsuit. In the settlement Woodsford has resolved those claims by withdrawing all financial support related to the Ecuador litigation and assigning all of its interest in the litigation to Chevron.

Chevron Corp urged a U.S. appeals court on Monday to uphold a ruling finding that an American lawyer used corrupt means to secure a $9.5 billion pollution judgment in Ecuador.
