Vestas Taps Car Battery Know-how for Wind Power Storage

The world's largest wind turbine maker Vestas is tapping into experience from the car battery industry to try to address the challenge of using erratic wind and solar energy to meet a growing share of power demand. Energy storage is becoming increasingly important as production of renewable energy rises, because the wind might not blow or the sun shine during the peak hours when most consumers turns on their lights and appliances.

Sweden to Invest $18 million in Northvolt Battery Plant

Sweden will invest 146 million crowns ($18 million) in a multibillion-euro project to build Europe's biggest battery cell plant in the north of the country, its Energy Agency said on Monday. Swedish company Northvolt, whose CEO Peter Carlsson used to work for Tesla, is racing against rivals such as South Korea's LG Chem to set up large-scale battery cell plants across Europe, where automakers and industrial firms have so far been largely reliant on Asian imports.

Rapid Contract Lifts and Transports Five Gas Tanks

Rapid Response Solutions (RRS) combined its lifting and transport capabilities to move five gas tanks from a live chemical plant in Middlesbrough, 300 miles south west to Cardiff, where they were to be refurbished for industrial gases company Air Products before installation at another site. RRS accepted a scope of work to lift the tanks, ranging in size from 13m to 18m in length and 35t to 40t in weight, onto various transport vehicles chosen from its extensive fleet.

Njord Offshore Orders BMT-designed WSVs

BMT Nigel Gee Ltd. announced that it has won a design for the construction of up to eight advanced 26m Windfarm Support Vessels (WSV), to be built by the Australian shipbuilder, Strategic Marine. First LNG-Powered Tugboat Sets Sails

M/T Borgøy, the world’s first tug to be fuelled by the much more environmentally friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG), designed by Norwegian Buksèr og Berging in-house team with the assistance of Marine Design AS in Norway, further developed by Sanmar’s modern shipyard in Istanbul, completed her sea trials successfully this month and started her maiden voyage to Norway on January 14. The engines, propulsion package and LNG system were delivered by Rolls Royce.
