Floating solar photovoltaic (PV), initially considered a niche technology, is now the fastest-growing solar PV category, alongside ground-mounted utility-scale solar and rooftop PV. As of August 2020, more than 60 countries have actively pursued the deployment of floating PV, with more than 35 installing an estimated 350 operational floating PV systems, equal to a total 2.6 GW of installed capacity.

SE Asia to Expand Floating Solar Set to Grow

Floating solar photovoltaic (PV)  panels are making a splash in Southeast Asia. Development of floating solar PV power plants is expected to increase 100-fold in the region over the next five to 15 years, according to energy research firm Rystad Energy. Projects plans are in the works in Thailand and Vietnam as large-scale floating PV installations, with smaller utility-scale floating PV developments being proposed in Indonesia…

RNRG’s SRA Systems Improve Power Prediction Accuracy

When developing a utility-scale solar PV project, accurately projecting the site’s power output is crucial. For its 33 MW Kumenan PV project in Japan, Pacifico Energy experimented with publicly available data before seeking a more precise measurement solution. After implementing SRA Systems from Renewable NRG Systems (RNRG)—a leading designer and manufacturer of decision support tools for the global…

World First to Combine Big Solar and Storage

A world-leading project in far north Queensland is set to combine big battery storage and big solar to supply solar power after sundown and during peak usage times. The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is providing $17.4 million funding support for Conergy to build and operate a 10.8 MW (AC) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with 1.4 MW / 5.3 MWh of lithium-ion battery storage near the town of Lakeland.

ABB's Microgrid Solution for S. Africa

ABB announced that it will install an integrated solar-diesel microgrid at its Longmeadow premises in Johannesburg, South Africa. The 96,000 square meter facility houses the company’s country headquarters as well as medium voltage switchgear manufacturing and protection panel assembly facilities, with around 1,000 employees. The innovative solution includes a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) field and a PowerStoreTM grid stabilizer…

Solar Plant Taking Shape at Iconic Broken Hill

The heritage listed destination synonymous with Mad Max and the birth of Australia’s mining sector will soon be home to one of the country’s largest solar farms. ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht said the first of around 650,000 panels had recently been installed by First Solar at AGL Energy Limited’s (AGL) $150 million Broken Hill solar photovoltaic (PV) plant. “When complete, the 53 MW plant will power up to 17,000 homes with renewable energy,” Mr Frischknecht said.

Australia's Largest Solar Plant Complete

The final solar panel has been installed at the Southern Hemisphere’s largest solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Nyngan, New South Wales, paving the way for more utility-scale solar plants to be built in Australia. ARENA, AGL and First Solar today joined NSW Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy Anthony Roberts and NSW Minister for the Environment Mark Speakman on site to celebrate the significant milestone.

Tracking Clouds for Smoother Solar Energy Delivery

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) today announced $452,000 funding for Fulcrum3D to further develop an advanced cloud tracking system. ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht said that effectively tracking and predicting cloud movements was a key factor in getting the most out of solar PV installations. “Fulcrum3D’s ‘CloudCAM’ forecasting technology takes a clever approach to cloud tracking”, Mr Frischknecht said.

Israeli Solar Firm Looks to Operate 24/7

Promises more effective heat storage than current methods. Company expects quick market penetration; says can match fossil fuel-fired power plants on price. An Israeli solar power company, Brenmiller Energy, says it has developed a new, more efficient way to store heat from the sun that could give a boost to the thermal solar power industry by enabling plants to run at full capacity night and day.

ABB Inverters Connect Malaysia’s Largest Solar Plant to Grid

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has delivered and commissioned key components to integrate renewable energy from Amcorp Power Sdn Bhd’s Gemas 10.25 Megawatt (MW) Solar Power Plant into Malaysia’s electric grid as the country seeks to intensify its reliance on emission-free energy sources. Amcorp Power’s solar plant located in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan, about 100 miles from the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur…
