Digital solutions are accelerating the progress required to ensure CCS earns its place in climate change mitigation history.Carbon capture has been around since the 90s, but the behavior of CO2 in pipelines is still not that well understood. A lack of suitable multiphase flow assurance models has meant that past CCS projects have had to apply large, costly safety margins to transport and injection systems. Between 2020 and 2022, the CO2FACT project addressed the shortfalls, and along with the development of the LedaFlow simulator, the knowledge gaps are being closed. LedaFlow will come with an improved module for pure CO2 in the spring of 2024.

New Water Dissolvable Frac Ball Tooling Launched

Victory Elements says its newly launched water dissolvable ceramic materials for hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells are designed to provide performance and cost advantages compared to conventional practices including faster completion times, reduced completion costs and less environmental impact. The novel system, featuring solid ceramic frac balls of various diameters, fully dissolves in water and brine solutions without acidification and eliminates mechanical processes to remove or retrieve standard frac balls. According to William Reineke…

New Lidar Tech Approved for Use by SGRE for Wind Turbine Testing

Siemens Gamesa recently tested a new technology together with ZX Lidars, and based on the results both on the medium range and long range measurements, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) approves the use of the nacelle-based Continuous Wave scanning Lidar ‘ZX TM’ from Lidar OEM ZX Lidars for Power Performance Testing. In addition, operational ‘rotor equivalent’ power curves can also be measured with ZX TM’s 50 points around the full rotor swept area, particularly important for turbines with larger rotor diameters offshore and on onshore sites with…

The Case for 3D Printing Downhole Tools

Image 2: This triple-image of a cutting tool shows stages of design optimization from original CAD model, to topology optimized result, to the final additively-manufacturable part. Designed in nTop Platform by nTopology partner Yamaichi Special Steel.

Advanced design software supports growth of additive manufacturing applications in the oil and gas industryAdditive manufacturing (AM, aka 3D printing) is beginning to impact product-development strategies in the oil and gas industry just as it already has in many other industries—by shifting the production paradigm in unexpected ways.Particularly in the case of downhole tools, overall tool size is compatible with the range of part dimensions that today’s AM systems are capable of manufacturing. Consider a common piece of equipment on any oil and gas rig: the tricone drill bit.

Safety Product: Magnetic Fall Protection System

Rotterdam-based McNetiq launched a new line of magnetic anchors for fall protection when working at height.

Rotterdam-based McNetiq launched a new line of magnetic anchors for fall protection when working at height. The first product in this series from McNetiq is the workplace safety device McNetiq Fall Restraint, intended for workplaces constructed of steel without edge protection. The operator is connected to this anchor with a measured working line so that the worker can never get past the unsecured edge. Areas of application are: loading and unloading work on ship decks, construction and demolition work on drilling platforms, shipbuilding and maintenance, and working on cranes and windmills. This new application is based on Controlock technology.

Halliburton Introduces Automated Drilling Telemetry Service

Quick and reliable data transmission enables faster well deliveryOilfield services company Halliburton released a new measurement while drilling (MWD) technology designed to provide quick and reliable downhole information at extended depths to deliver wells faster. This capability helps operators drill longer laterals, make improved geosteering decisions and reduce well time to maximize their asset value, the manufacturer said. The QuickPulse Automated Directional Gamma Service system combines directional, vibration and gamma ray sensors with a strong transmission signal that overcomes most downhole interference.

Oilfield Services Pricing Rises

Oilfield services companies are in bullish mode. They are now able to raise prices for their products and services, after several years of gloom.“Oil and gas investments are on the rise, and so too is the pricing power of service companies. After losing pricing power in 2015 and 2016, oilfield service companies have since regained some of the lost ground, thanks first and foremost to industry consolidation among players that has concentrated the market over the past couple of years,” said Audun Martinsen, head of oilfield service research at Rystad Energy.“Pricing power is likely to be further strengthened within the service industry…
