Paris Climate Deal Won't Impact India's Coal Output

India: No impact of climate agreement on coal plans. India still plans to double coal output by 2020 and rely on the resource for decades afterwards, a senior official said on Monday, days after rich and poor countries agreed in Paris to curb carbon emissions blamed for global warming. India, the world's third-largest carbon emitter, is dependant on coal for about two-thirds of its energy needs and has pledged to mine more of the fuel to power its resource-hungry economy while also promising to increase clean energy generation.

China, India Coal Numbers Unencouraging: Russell

It seems coal miners and traders just can't catch a break, with a rebound in China's imports being tempered by early signs of a turning point in India's import growth. The main problem for coal exporters such as Australia, Indonesia and South Africa is that China's surge in imports in July is unlikely to be sustained, while India's decline may well be the start of a longer-lasting trend. China, the world's biggest producer and importer of coal, brought in 21.26 million tonnes in July…

India Coal Output Might End Disappointing Performance

One of the most common assumptions among coal watchers is that India's rising demand will translate into increasing imports, thus providing one of the few bright spots for a beleaguered industry. While there is little doubt about the bullish demand outlook for India, the belief that imports will have to rise is predicated on the view that domestic coal output will continue to disappoint. If history is a guide, then this is a safe bet, with state-controlled behemoth Coal India…

India to Open Coal to Commercial Mining Firms

India expects to hold auctions for private firms to mine and sell coal in the near future, the country's coal and power minister Piyush Goyal said but first wants to deal with mines that are directly linked to plants that use the fuel. To boost output and cut imports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi passed an executive decree in December to open up India's nationalised coal industry. Bids have been invited from firms that use coal for their own power, steel or cement plants.

Coal India Worker Unions Call Off 5-day Strike

Coal India workers, protesting a move to open up the industry to private firms, called off their five-day strike on its second day on Wednesday, the Coal Secretary said.   "Consequent to the intervention by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Coal, strike by Coal India workers called off," Anil Swarup said in a tweet.   (Reporting by Krishna N. India's Coal Imports Causing Port Congestion

Congestion at Paradip expected to ease in a week if rains stop; higher-than-usual congestion at some other ports too. Indian power and steel companies are importing shiploads of coal due to a severe shortage at home, leading to heavy congestion in one of the country's busiest ports that now has twice the number of vessels waiting than its available berths. The over-crowding at Paradip port in eastern Odisha could derail India's efforts to prevent a shutdown of more than half…

Indian Coal Stocks Lowest Since 2012 Blackouts

State-run Coal India unable to meet rising demand; Fall in hydro power adding to grid problems. Half of India's thermal power stations have less than a week's supply of coal on hand, according to weekly data, the lowest level since mid-2012 when hundreds of millions of people were cut off in one of the world's worst blackouts. There was a sharp fall in power output on Thursday from a plant in the western state of Gujarat that left India more than 9,000 megawatts short of peak demand, according to two officials at the state grid operator.

India Starts First Coal Mine in Five Years

Coal India Ltd started production on Friday at a 12-million-tonnes-per-year mine, its first major new project in at least five years, which should help boost supplies to fuel-starved power plants. The world's biggest coal miner has struggled to raise output fast enough to meet rising demand from power companies, making India the world's third-largest coal importer despite sitting on the fifth-biggest reserves. Coal India unit Central Coalfields took almost a decade to start digging out coal from the Amrapali open cast pit in the eastern state of Jharkhand…

India Coal Power Plants Struggle to Meet Demand

Nearly half of India's coal-fired power stations only have enough stocks to last a week, the power minister said, as the country struggles to connect millions to the grid and wrestles with a growing coal import bill. Coal imports equate to about one percent of India's economy as state behemoth Coal India, the world's largest coal miner, has failed to raise output fast enough to meet demand. This leads to frequent blackouts, something new Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen to fix soon but which will raise coal shipments from countries such as Indonesia, Australia and South Africa.

New Indian Govt Fights Power Cuts

India's new energy minister pulled an all-night work session to tackle power cuts caused by a dust storm in New Delhi on Friday and provide more electricity to the country's largest state that is suffering outages in sweltering summer heat. The power crunch is a test of whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in power for less than a week, can live up to the reputation for reliable services he built during more than a decade as chief minister of Gujarat. Uttar Pradesh, where one in six Indians live…
