Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. signed a contract with KEYS Bunkering West Japan Co., Ltd. for construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel, the first to operate in western Japan. With all eyes on carbon neutrality, a pair of Japanese maritime titans -- Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) -- have agreed to jointly develop a large-scale liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carrier. To facilitate the development of technologies for transporting CO2 using large vessels, this project will combine Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s gas handling technologies with NYK Line’s knowledge in operations of not only small and medium-sized vessels, but also large vessels that are expected to increase in demand globally. As the marine industry works to find the ‘fuel of the future’ to address increasingly stringent emission regulations, an interesting development from a trio of marine powers in Japan seeks to develop the world’s first ammonia-fueled tugboat. The joint research and development agreement was signed by NYK, IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd., and ClassNK recently to put the world's first ammonia-fueled tugboat into practical use.With the entry into force of the Paris Agreement in 2016, global momentum for decarbonization has increased, and reducing GHG emissions has become an issue in the shipping sector.

NYK Joins DecarbonICE Project

Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) has joined the international DecarbonICE project that will be conducting a feasibility study to capture onboard carbon as dry ice and store it in seafloor sediments.The shipping industry is looking for carbon-free solutions to achieve the IMO 2050 target of a 50% CO2 emissions reduction (compared to the 2008 level). Shell Exercises FPSO Turritella Purchase Option

Shell E&P Offshore Services B.V. will exercise its right under the charter agreement to purchase the floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) Turritella, enabling a Shell affiliate to assume operatorship of the Gulf of Mexico ultra-deepwater Stones development in its entirety. The company selling the FPSO is a joint-venture (JV) owned by SBM Offshore with 55 percent interest, Mitsubishi Corporation with 30 percent interest and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) with 15 percent interest. The transaction comprises a total cash consideration to the JV of approximately $1 billion. The transaction is expected to close in early 2018.

SEA\LNG - which works to accelerate the widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel - has welcomed two new partners, each representing key aspects of the LNG maritime value chain. The recent decision by the International Maritime Organization Marine Environment Protection Committee to enforce the global 0.5% cap on the sulphur content of marine fuel by 2020 has significantly increased interest in LNG as a cost effective, safe and more environmentally friendly fuel. ENGIE, Mitsubishi, NYK Tie-up for LNG Bunkering

ENGIE, Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK Line have launched Gas4Sea, a new brand for their joint marketing of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel around the world. Gas4Sea aims to lead innovation through the ship-to-ship supply of LNG for the maritime sector. In 2014, ENGIE, Mitsubishi Corporation, and NYK concluded a framework agreement for a partnership to develop LNG bunkering services. By combining NYK’s shipping expertise with ENGIE and Mitsubishi Corporation’s LNG supply portfolio and terminal access under the brand Gas4Sea, the partners will offer a cleaner, reliable, safe, and cost-effective service to shipping customers worldwide.

Sovcomflot Ups its Role in the Sakhalin-2 Project

Sovcomflot Group (SCF Group) said its fleet will have greater involvement in serving the Sakhalin-2 offshore platforms for Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. (Sakhalin Energy). SCF Group, Sakhalin Energy and Swire Pacific Offshore have signed several agreements that entail the purchase of two platform supply vessels from Swire Pacific Offshore by SCF Group. All the three platform supply vessels used in the Sakhalin-2 project will now be operated by SCF Group under long-term time charter contracts with Sakhalin Energy. The three ships are multipurpose ice-class (Ice-10) supply vessels, which have been under the management of the joint venture SCF Swire Offshore since 2009.

Wärtsilä in Coalition to Promote LNG as a Marine Fuel

Wärtsilä and other leading marine industry players have formed a coalition, known as SEA/LNG, to accelerate the widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel. The coalition aims to help break down the barriers hindering the global development of LNG in marine applications, thereby improving the environmental performance of the shipping industry. In addition to Wärtsilä, the other partners in the SEA/LNG coalition include Carnival Corporation, DNV-GL, ENGIE, ENN Group, GE Marine, GTT, Lloyds Register, Mitsubishi, NYK Line, Port of Rotterdam, Qatargas, Shell Downstream and Tote.

NYK Joins Study for LNG Bunkering in Yokohama

NYK is participating in a study launched by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to explore the feasibility of LNG bunkering in Yokohama. This study is examining the technological and infrastructural requirements for establishment of an LNG bunkering hub at the port of Yokohama to supply LNG as fuel to ships. A kick-off meeting of the study’s steering committee was held on June 9 for the creation of a facility development plan by the end of the year. In accordance with the NYK Group’s medium-term management plan, “More Than Shipping 2018,” NYK has started the process of using LNG to fuel some ships.

SBM Offshore First-half Beats Forecasts

SBM Offshore, the Dutch oil and gas platform leasing company, reported better than expected first-half profit on Wednesday after slashing costs and said it would double annual savings at a time of low oil prices. SBM Offshore, which has said it will cut 1,500 staff, or more than 10 percent of its global workforce, expects annual savings of about $80 million compared with previous guidance of $40 million. It also increased its 2015 revenue forecasts to $2.6 billion, from $2.2 billion, mainly due to the $590 million sale of a stake in its Turritella project in the Gulf Of Mexico to new joint venture partners Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK Line.

SBM Offshore Divests Stake in Turritella Project

SBM Offshore has entered an agreement with Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) for the acquisition of a stake in the joint venture companies incorporated for the purpose of owning and operating Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) Turritella, the company announced today. Mitsubishi Corporation (30 percent interest) and NYK Line (15 percent interest) have acquired a 45 percent combined stake in the joint venture companies. SBM Offshore, MC and NYK Line are also partners in other joint venture companies incorporated for the purpose of owning and operating FPSOs such as Cidade de Maricá and Cidade de Saquarema.

MHI Receives First Order through MI LNG

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order for an LNG (liquefied natural gas) carrier for Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) through MI LNG Co., Ltd., a joint venture established with Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in April 2013. The order - the first received via MI LNG - is the eighth to date for the Sayaendo, a next-generation LNG carrier offering superior fuel efficiency developed independently by MHI. Completion and delivery of the ship are scheduled for 2017. The Sayaendo LNG carrier measures 288 meters (m) in length overall (LOA), 48.94m in width, and 11.5m in draft.

First Solar-Power-Assisted Vessel in Development
