Britain Blocks Plans for New Coal Mine on Climate Grounds

Britain has rejected plans for a new open cast coal mine in northeastern England, as it could hamper efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb climate change, the minister for local government said on Friday. Supporters of the project had said it could bring much needed jobs to the region, while environmental campaigners said it would go against Britain's commitment to reduce greenhouse gases.

Trafigura's LNG Trade Soared in 2017

Commodities trader Trafigura grew liquefied natural gas (LNG) traded volumes by 27 percent to 8.1 million tonnes of the super-cooled fuel this year after expanding its trading desk, aided by sharp Asian demand growth. Swiss trading houses are expanding into the global market for LNG, until recently the preserve of energy giants, and expect to grab a $10 billion share of the business this year, delivering more than 8.5 percent of global supply.

Centrica Weighs Final Bids for UK Gas Plants

British utility Centrica is in the process of assessing final bids for the gas-fired power plants it has put up for sale but offers are likely to be below the company's target price of 500 million pounds ($767.8 million), sources familiar with the matter said. "My understanding is that three parties are still looking," said one source close to the bidding process. Two other sources confirmed the number.

EU Nod for UK Teesside Biomass Plant

Britain secured European Union approval on Thursday to build a biomass plant in north-east England after state aid regulators said the scheme would boost the bloc's energy and environmental goals. The Teesside plant, one of three given British approval to operate in April last year, aims to generate 299 MW of electricity starting in July 2018, saving about 32 million tons of carbon emissions over its 30-year lifetime.
