Pemex Delves Deep into UK Subsea Sector

Senior figures from Mexico’s national oil company, Pemex, have been discovering the secrets of the UK subsea sector’s success and how it has revolutionized the way in which hydrocarbons have been extracted from beneath the seabed during a fact-finding visit to Aberdeen. Organized in partnership with the Department of International Trade (DIT), the five-day subsea learning event included site visits to some of the sector’s most innovative companies, including GE Oil & Gas, Aker Solutions, Hydrasun, Wood Group, BP and ROVOP.

UK Subsea Sector Set to Increase Exports in 2017

British subsea companies are expecting to increase overseas activity in the next 12 months, according to a survey conducted by industry body, Subsea UK. Of the 300 member companies surveyed, 27% are predicting increasing exports by 50% or more in 2017. More than half (56%) expect overseas sales to increase between 1% and 49% with only 17% not expecting any increase in export revenues. A third of companies surveyed do not yet know what effect Brexit will have on their export plans, with 49% believing that it will have no impact on their plans.

Enpro Subsea Drives $1.8mln into Flow Assurance Project

Enpro Subsea has announced a research and development grant from Scottish Enterprise which will see the firm investing £1.5million ($1.85mln) to develop its flow assurance technology further to address emerging markets in deeper waters. The news came as Scottish Enterprise revealed a new Subsea Engineering Action Plan with the aim of capturing an even bigger slice of the current £50 billion ($61.5bln) global subsea market. Scottish Government Minister for Business, Innovation and Energy, Paul Wheelhouse, visited oil and gas firm, Enpro Subsea Ltd to announce its new £1.5 million ($1.85mln)  investment to support innovation, a key theme of the plan.

O&G Seeks Clarity on New Skills Tax

The oil and gas industry, led by its skill organization OPITO, is calling for immediate clarity on how the money from the new tax, raised through the Apprenticeship Levy, will be redistributed. OPITO is concerned that no decision has been made by the Scottish government on this, despite the UK government confirming the amount the Scottish government will receive and clarifying how the money will be spent in England. John McDonald, UK managing director of OPITO, said, “The apprenticeship levy will be introduced on April 1, 2017.

Subsea Supplies Launches Online Ordering Solution

Subsea Supplies has invested £50,000 to launch a new online procurement solution that gives clients access to thousands of products at the touch of a button. The Aberdeen-based company, which supplies cables, components and connectors to firms operating in underwater-related industries, developed the solution in partnership with city-based design agency, Form Digital. Subsea Supplies says the new solution, which has been heralded by industry body, Subsea UK, will speed up the ordering process for clients, improve efficiencies and gives it scope to market components and equipment to a broader client base.

Two Named to NSRI Board

Melfort Campbell and Martin Jones have been appointed to strengthen the board of the National Subsea Research Initiative (NSRI). With impressive pedigrees in innovation and technology in the subsea industry, these new board members will help NSRI deliver its aim of bringing new technology to market that will reduce costs and deliver efficiencies and help the UK subsea sector maintain its world-leading position. NSRI is the focal point for research and development in the UK’s subsea sector, which is worth $13.9billion to the economy.

Subsea UK to Support SMEs with Apprenticeships

Subsea UK has launched a new support service to bring fresh, young talent into the subsea sector by making it easier for businesses to recruit apprentices. Research conducted by the industry body which represents the U.K.’s $14 billion subsea sector revealed the barriers for SMEs in setting up apprenticeships. These are broadly the time and cost involved in what is perceived as a complex process. Subsea UK’s scheme will provide financial support and specific help with making the process simpler so that small firms can benefit from apprentices and develop the next generation of subsea workers.

Subsea UK Portal Helps Members Go Global

Subsea UK has launched a new online portal to help subsea companies export skills, technology and expertise to oil and gas provinces around the world. The industry body, which represents the UK’s $14 billion subsea sector, has also become an accredited trade partner of the UKTI’s Tradeshow Access Program (TAP) which will see the organisation lead the way in facilitating the attendance of UK subsea companies at overseas trade shows. Susbea UK’s specially-developed portal, Global Business – is an exclusive on-line tool which provides regularly updated details on opportunities in over 20 countries.

New Online Learning Program for Subsea Engineers

Subsea UK has launched its new online learning program to support the development of new engineers and technicians entering the subsea sector and to develop graduates to become the next generation of engineers to help the UK’s $14 billion subsea sector achieve its global potential. The Introduction to Subsea Engineering course can be completed in around 60 hours, spread over eight weeks. Students will study a series of modules to become fully inducted into a sector which has revolutionized the way in which hydrocarbons are extracted since its early days in the late seventies.

New Market Intelligence for Subsea Companies

Subsea UK has launched a new market intelligence service to help subsea companies exploit global opportunities. The industry body, which represents the UK’s $13.3 billion subsea sector, has developed SubseaIntel – a unique on-line database which provides regularly updated details on almost 1,200 subsea projects worldwide. Subsea UK says this unique database will provide sought-after subsea market intelligence all in one place, at the touch of a button. Subsea Intel allows users to delve deeper into current projects across the globe and discover upcoming opportunities using intensively researched data.

O&G Center Reports High Demand

The newly established Oil & Gas Innovation Center (OGIC) is already having an impact on accelerating new technologies to support the North Sea oil and gas Industry, the center said. At its official launch hosted by Hydro Group plc in Aberdeen Monday, November 10, OGIC revealed that it now has its first approved and funded projects coming on stream and is in discussion with more than 50 companies regarding technology development opportunities. OGIC provides a single access point to the knowledge and capabilities of Scottish universities for the oil and gas industry.
