Under pollution alert, Beijing orders 1,200 factories to shut

Beijing's city government has ordered 1,200 factories near the Chinese capital, including an oil refinery run by state oil major Sinopec and a Cofco food plant, to either shut or cut output following its highest possible air pollution warning. Beijing to shut 2,500 firms to fight pollution

Beijing will close 2,500 small polluting firms this year in its latest effort to combat pollution, state news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday, citing the municipal government. Pollution is a sensitive topic in China, with thousands of protests sparked every year by concerns about environmental degradation, particularly from factories. Four districts in the capital, which has been hit by bouts of choking smog this winter, will be required to shut down 2,500 companies by the end of the year, with more scheduled to be closed next year, Xinhua said.

Beijing 2014 Pollution Levels Down

Beijing recorded a slight drop in smog levels in 2014, the municipal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said Sunday, though some pollutants remained at 150 percent above national minimum levels. The city government has restricted coal use, shut down factories and introduced new fuel standards for cars and trucks in a bid to limit a surge in air pollution that at times has left the Chinese capital shrouded in smog. Data released Sunday showed the city is making slow progress in combating pollution, which reports say ends hundreds of thousands of lives in China prematurely every year.

Beijing: Emissions Fall in First Tear of Carbon Trading

Carbon dioxide emissions from Beijing's major polluters fell 4.5 percent in 2013 as a nascent emissions trading scheme cut compliance costs for firms, the Chinese capital's municipal government said on Monday.
