The move toward LNG as fuel is gaining momentum quickly, driven not only by newbuild installations but now by companies signing on to convert existing ships to the environmentally friendly solution. Germany's Wessels Reederei -- which was the first company in the world to convert a containership to LNG fuel, signed a letter of intent with MAN Diesel & Turbo regarding the conversion of three of its fleet to dual-fuel gas operation.

MAN’s Subsea Compressors Reach Field Proven Status

Both subsea compression trains at Statoil’s Åsgard field have achieved more than 25,000 operation hours with an availability close to 100 percent. The world’s first subsea gas compression facility features two MAN Diesel & Turbo HOFIM motor-compressor units. The Åsgard subsea compression system has officially reached the highest Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7 with both trains surpassing 10,000 operating hours.

The Next Generation in Subsea Compression Technology

The world’s first subsea compression systems at Statoil’s Åsgard field will help recover an additional 306 million barrels of oil equivalents in a more cost-effective, safe and green manner. (Image: Aker Solutions)

Just one year after the first subsea compression systems went on stream at Statoil’s offshore Åsgard field, industry giants Aker Solutions and MAN Diesel & Turbo now aim to cut the size and weight of such systems by at least 50 percent. Compressors are used to maintain output as reservoir pressure at gas-producing fields drops over time – typically installed on platforms above sea level.

Alfa Laval EGR-HPE Economizer a Boon

With Tier III NOx limits entering into force in North America and the US Caribbean in January 2016, the time has come for many ship owners to choose their method of compliance. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) on MAN B&W engines has strong advantages on its own. But combined with a new pressurized EGR economizer from Alfa Laval, it also offers the potential for massive fuel savings.

Oil’s Downward Spiral Stalls LNG’s Ascent

As industry embraces gas, emissions regulations loom large and bunker logistics options develop, LNG’s fortunes nevertheless get a boost. For every gleeful consumer at the pump, and stockpiling tanker anchored offshore, there’s a corresponding trail of businesses that are struggling to ride out the worst price drop in crude since the mid-1980s. As oil giants slash CapEx…

PrimeServ Lands Significant London Service Contract

Lower Prices Blunt Drive for Efficiency: Kemp

For a decade, high and rising prices have created a strong incentive to use oil-derived fuels more sparingly. By the end of 2012, efficiency improvements, substitution, and changes in behaviour had cut oil consumption in the advanced economies by 8 million barrels per day (bpd) compared with the pre-2005 trend, according to James Hamilton at the University of California ("The changing face of world oil markets" July 2014).
