Total and Shell back out of carbon storage project in the Netherlands

AMSTERDAM (25 April) - After TotalEnergies & Shell retracted part of their planned investment, the Dutch government announced on Friday that it would invest 639 million euro ($726 millions) in the construction of the largest carbon capture and storing project of the Netherlands. The two major oil companies have decided not to invest in the infrastructure needed to connect the industries with the storage sites under the North Sea in gas fields that are depleted. The government stepped in to minimize risks for two remaining investors: the Dutch Gas Grid Operator Gasunie and the Dutch government-owned EBN.

Italy pays gas incentive for meeting 90% storage target
Gas grid operator Snam announced that Italy will introduce an incentive program at the beginning of this month in order to encourage companies to inject gas into storage following the end of the winter season when its sites were only 42% full. The European Commission set an ambitious target of 90% filling Europe's gas storages by the 1st November to avoid supply shortages and shocks during winter. The mandate has caused prices to be higher than normal for the summer months and often above winter contracts. This means that traders are less motivated to store gas, which prompts European Union countries negotiate storage targets.
Portugal imports more US and Nigerian LNG in order to stop Russian supplies
The Portuguese government plans to buy more liquefied gas (LNG), mainly from the United States, and Nigeria to replace its already diminishing Russian supplies. This was announced by Environment Minister Maria da Graca Carvalho on Tuesday. Data from the electricity and gas grid operator REN show that Portugal will import 49,141 gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2024. Of this, 96% is LNG. About 40% of these LNG deliveries came from the United States, and about 4.4% from Russia. In 2021, Russia will account for 15% of Portugal’s LNG. After Russia invaded Ukraine…
Gas prices in Europe are falling, but the geopolitical risks remain
The Dutch and British wholesale gas price fell on Tuesday due to increased wind power and a steady Norwegian supply. However, geopolitical tensions continued to support the prices, which are now near their highest level this year. LSEG data shows that the benchmark front-month contract for the Dutch TTF hub fell by 1.29 euros to 39.61 euros per Megawatt Hour (MWh) at 0834 GMT. The British front-month price fell 0.99 pence to 99.85 pence, while the British day-ahead was 2.75 pence less at 97.25 p/therm. Elexon data shows that the peak wind generation in Britain will increase from 11.9 gigawatts on Tuesday to 15 GW on Wednesday.
Grid operators claim that Britain will have enough energy this winter to meet the needs of its citizens
The UK's electricity and Gas Grid Operators expect enough supplies this winter with more power imported and domestic production available than last season and high gas storage in Europe, said they on Tuesday. National Gas and Britain's National Energy System Operator, (NESO), publish annual reports on the supply and demand for the upcoming winter to assist businesses and governments in preparing. Craig Dyke is the director of system operations for NESO. NESO's base case for the de-rated margin is 5.2 gigawatts for winter 2024/25. This is 8.8% of the peak average demand for cold spells. It is up from 4.4 GW or 7.4% of last winter.
Zara founder Ortega triples investment in energy assets
Amancio Ortega, founder of Zara and his investment company Pontegadea, almost tripled their investments in renewable energy last year. They are continuing to expand the efforts they have made to diversify Amancio Ortega’s fortune outside his fashion empire. The 2023 financial statements filed at the Mercantile Register, and seen by reveals that the Inditex family office, which is the owner of Zara's mother company, invested 693 million euros (766.87 millions) in wind, solar, and other energy assets across Spain and France. This was up from the 273 million euros in 2022. Inditex has recently set new environmental targets by 2030 to respond to regulatory demands.
