Finland Eyes Imports of Piped Gas via Baltics, Poland
Finland could in future receive gas from Norway via a network of pipes being planned through the Baltic countries and Poland, as part of an effort to reduce its dependency on gas imports from Russia.Helsinki and Tallinn are constructing a gas pipeline under the Gulf of Finland to Estonia, called Balticconnector and with a capacity to transport 7.2 million cubic meters of gas per day."The plan is for Finland to get fully connected to the European gas network and access gas from other sources such as ... Norwegian gas…
Denmark-Netherlands Subsea Power Cable Reaches Dutch Coast
A subsea power line set to link the networks of Denmark and the Netherlands reached the Dutch coast on Friday as part of plans to share excess electricity from wind farms and other sources. The 325 km (202 mile) long COBRAcable, short for Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam, has a capacity of around 700 megawatts (MW) and is expected to become fully operational in the third quarter of 2019."This is an important step towards the integration of electricity networks in western Europe," said Jeroen Brouwers, spokesman for Dutch grid operator TenneT."We will now have the first link between the Netherlands and Denmark, adding to existi
Poland, Denmark to Launch Gas Pipeline Survey
So-called Open Season process to start on June 6; survey will help operators confirm demand for capacities. Poland and Denmark will launch a key survey next week to determine demand for capacity in a planned gas pipeline linking the two countries, a project which could allow Poland to import up to 10 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas from Norway. Poland imports most of the 15-16 bcm of gas it consumes annually from Russia and hopes deliveries from Norway, as well as by sea through its liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the Baltic coast, will reduce that reliance.
Energy Island: Europeans Mull North Sea Hub
A plan set in motion by three European transmission system operators (TSO) aims to develop mammoth offshore wind farm infrastructure in the North Sea supported by at least one manmade island. First unveiled in June 2016, plans for the North Sea Wind Power Hub project will now press ahead to develop a large offshore renewable European electricity system following the signing of a trilateral agreement by TenneT TSO B.V. (Netherlands), Energinet.dk (Denmark) and TenneT TSO GmbH (Germany) in Brussels on March 23, 2017.
Britain Faces New Risks in Europe Interconnector Plans
British plans for more power links with Europe to avert a looming electricity shortfall could be hindered if the country no longer has a say in European Union regulation of networks and power trading. Britain faces an energy supply crunch by the early 2020s as coal power stations close and its oil and gas production declines. To help it plans new interconnectors with France, Denmark, Belgium and Norway to provide up to 14 gigawatts of additional capacity. Its current four interconnectors with Europe provide around 4 GW of capacity.
