ROTTERDAM – Today in Rotterdam Wessels Marine and MAN Energy Systems announced an innovative project to convert the containership Wes Amelie to run on Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG).While SNG today is far to sparse and expensive to make it a near term commercial reality, this step forward is significant in that a ship outfitted with an MAN propulsion unit to run on LNG would need no modification to have it run on SNG, effectively making it ‘future proof’ while helping to dispel the notion that LNG is merely a bridge step to strict new emission regulations which seek to cut greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime sector 50% by 2050.Wes Amelie…

Tesla Wins U.S. Antitrust Approval to Buy SolarCity

Tesla Motors Inc has won U.S. antitrust approval to buy solar panel installer SolarCity Corp, the Federal Trade Commission said on Thursday.   The deal was on a listing of proposed transactions that have won "early termination."   The deal was announced on Aug. 1 and is part of an effort by Tesla to improve economies of scale in electrical energy management systems, battery production and marketing.   (Reporting by Diane Bartz)

Wärtsilä, Cavotec Developing Wireless Charging, Mooring Concept

An agreement has been signed between Wärtsilä and Cavotec to jointly develop the world's first combined induction charging and automatic mooring concept. Wärtsilä has developed a wireless charging system based on inductive power transfer. Cavotec provides automated mooring systems for various types of vessels, as well as shore power and reel systems. By combining the strengths and expertise of the two companies, an integrated wireless charging/mooring concept is to be developed for use in Wärtsilä's ship designs. Wireless charging eliminates the cable connection between the vessel and shore, thereby securing and facilitating safe connections and disconnections.

MHI Completes Testing of Wireless Power Transmission Technology

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has conducted ground demonstration testing of "wireless power transmission," a new technology presently under development to serve as the core technology of the space solar power systems (SSPS) that are expected to be the power generation systems of the future. With successful completion of the test at the company's Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works, MHI has now verified the viability of long-distance wireless power transmission. In the ground demonstration test, 10 kilowatts (kW) of power was sent from a transmitting unit by microwave.

Israeli Solar Firm Looks to Operate 24/7

Promises more effective heat storage than current methods. Company expects quick market penetration; says can match fossil fuel-fired power plants on price. An Israeli solar power company, Brenmiller Energy, says it has developed a new, more efficient way to store heat from the sun that could give a boost to the thermal solar power industry by enabling plants to run at full capacity night and day. By next year company founder Avi Brenmiller said he will have a 1.5 megawatt (MW), 15-acre (6-hectare) site in the Negev desert connected to Israel's national grid…

Finland Puts New Nuclear Plant Plan in Doubt

Finland's economy minister has rejected an application from power utility Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) to extend the permit for a new nuclear reactor in the west of the country, throwing the project into doubt. Minister Jan Vapaavuori instead conditionally backed another nuclear project, Finnish-Russian company Fennovoima's plan to build a new plant in Pyhajoki, in northern Finland, in a move that is likely to mean the country's five-party government will lose a small coalition partner, the Greens. Finland had approved both new reactors in 2010 as part of efforts to increase its self-sufficiency in power generation and reduce electricity prices…

Vacon AC Drives Continue Energy Efficiency Role

Rod Washington, Sr. Development Engineer, Vacon Inc. demonstrates AC drive energy efficiency principles to President Obama. Behind (left), Dan Isaksson, Vice President, Medium Voltage Drives, Vacon, and Dr. Ernest Moniz, United States Secretary of Energy.

Global AC drives manufacturer, Vacon, has estimated that its AC drive products helped save approximately 55 TWh of electrical energy for the year 2013, a 10% increase over the previous year (in 2012, Vacon reported savings of 50 TWh of electricity with the help of their AC drives). Putting this in perspective: 55 TWh corresponds to the annual energy produced by approximately 10 700 MW nuclear power reactors; or the annual electricity consumption of 12 million households. This also corresponds to approximately 22 hours of global annual electrical energy production(1) — almost one day of the planet’s electricity saved by the AC drives from one company!

Cleaning up Coal: Kemp

According to the popular narrative, coal is locked in a fight to the death with natural gas and renewables to supply clean electrical energy. Promoters of gas, wind and solar often talk about coal as if it were not just a rival but an enemy. Environmental campaigners want to phase out coal-fired power plants and leave most of the world's coal reserves below ground. Coal-fired power plants produce much higher carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and make the largest single contribution to global warming, so the conflict has a moral dimension. For their part, coal producers are battling new environmental regulations which they see as a threat to the survival of their firms and communities.

Odebrecht & Enagas win bid for 4.000 bln pipeline in Peru

A consortium of Brazil's Odebrecht and the Spanish Enagás Monday won a tender to build and operate a pipeline that will require an investment of 4,000 million dollars in Peru, the largest energy project in the country and key to the government of President Ollanta Humala. Proinversión, the body that promotes private investment in Peru, awarded the project to a group called South Peruvian pipeline, wherein the Odebrecht construction company has a 75 percent stake and 25 percent Enagás. The pipeline will run 1,000 kilometers from the rich deposit of natural gas from Camisea…

AXYS WindSentinel Floating LiDAR for EDP Inovação’s Demowfloat Project

Planet Ocean Ltd said that EDP Inovação (EDPi) has selected the AXYS WindSentinel for deployment off the coast of Portugal in support of their Demowfloat Initiative . The Demowfloat project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Program for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement No. 296050 and gathers 12 entities of 5 different countries who aim to test and monitor the performance of their floating wind turbine. The prototype, located 6km off the Portuguese shore, enables wind power to be harnessed at sea in deep water (depths greater than 40 m) for conversion to clean renewable electrical energy.

Subsea Energy Production Beats Topside Method Says ABB

ABB recently entered a partnership with international energy company Statoil to develop power solutions for subsea oil and gas production. A key challenge they identify is to develop reliable long-distance power transmission technology and to build components that can function for several decades at depths of up to 3,000 meters. The subsea industry has gained worldwide importance as oil companies strive for increased recovery and venture towards remote and deep waters in the hunt for new oil and gas fields. Increasing investment in offshore oilfield development is driving a subsea market that is estimated to grow 18 percent annually (CAGR); set to reach around $100 billion by 2020.
