Shell Develops Cylinder Lubricant: Shell Alexia 140

Shell Marine has given ship owners an insight into the comprehensive approach driving its ground-breaking work to protect the most modern ultra-efficient diesel engines against cold corrosion while still optimizing cylinder oil feed rates, across the entire range of vessel operating conditions. Shell Marine has been working very closely with the major OEMs and several ship owners who fully support this development. Following its formulation and exhaustive laboratory testing in 2015, the new Shell Alexia 140 has successfully completed over six months of shipboard trials with a Shell Marine customer.

Shell Marine to Showcase New LubeMonitor service at SMM

Shell Marine will preview its revitalised Shell LubeMonitor service, a cylinder monitoring service at SMM, held in Hamburg, Germany from Sept 6-10, 2016. Shell LubeMonitor offers easy to read reports, a complete engine overview, historical data from onboard and from the lab and, most importantly, comments from Shell experts highlighting areas for concern or possible optimisation opportunities. Big Win for Maersk Fluid Technology’s BOB System

In the second half of 2015, Maersk Fluid Technology introduced a new version of its cylinder oil ‘Blending-On-Board’ (BOB) system, targeting medium-sized 2-stroke propulsion engines with a cylinder bore between 420 and 680 mm. Now the first volume order has been placed for retrofit of the SEA-Mate B1000 system onto 12 tankers delivered to Maersk Tankers between 2005 and 2008 – ten vessels equipped with Wärtsilä (WinGD) RTA and RT-Flex engines with a bore between 580 and 620 mm and two vessels with engines designed by MAN Diesel & Turbo.

Oil Test Detects Cold Corrosion

Parker Kittiwake, the global provider of asset control and protection technology, has announced a breakthrough in onboard cold corrosion testing with their new portable test kit. In less than five minutes per test, Parker Kittiwake’s Cold Corrosion Test Kit monitors specific levels of corroded iron in used cylinder oil. As growing numbers of ship owners and operators favor new generation engines to reduce fuel costs and meet environmental requirements, the problem of cold corrosion escalates. Operating conditions…
