NYK Buys Stake in EMAS Chiyoda Subsea

NYK has acquired a 25 percent share of EMAS Chiyoda Subsea Limited (ECS), based on an agreement signed on June 10 with Ezra Holdings Limited (Ezra) and the Chiyoda Corporation (Chiyoda). ECS is a global player in the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of subsea facilities — essential components in offshore oil and gas field development. Ship of the Year Award for NYK Vessel

Japan's first LNG-fueled ship, Sakigake, which is a tugboat owned by NYK has been recognized with a Technology Special Award at the 2015 Ship of the Year Awards sponsored by the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE). An awards ceremony was held on July 7 at the Kaiun Club in Tokyo. This is the 26th year that JASNAOE has recognized the most technically advanced, well-designed, and socially conscious vessels built in Japan, and Sakigake was noted by manufacturers and related organizations for the tugboat’s environmental performance, design, and technological developments. And this is not the first time for the NYK Group to be honored.

NYK Acquires Coal Carrier

On September 25, a new 100,000 deadweight tonnage coal carrier ordered by NYK Bulkship (Asia) Pte. Ltd., an NYK Group subsidiary company based in Singapore, was delivered at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (Saikai city, Nagasaki prefecture). A delivery and naming ceremony was held at the shipyard on the same day and attended by NYK senior managing corporate officer Masahiro Samitsu and representatives from Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc. Tenryu Maru is the first coal carrier to be jointly owned by a power company and a shipping company.

Port of Soma Welcomes New Coal Carrier

On July 30, a ceremony was held at the port of Soma in Fukushima prefecture to commemorate the arrival of a new coal carrier, Shinchi Maru. This vessel was delivered in March this year and replaced the identically named Shinchi Maru vessel built in 1995. The new Shinchi Maru will carry coal from the port of Newcastle in Australia to the Shinchi power plant of Soma Kyodo Power Company Ltd. (head office: Shinchi town, Fukushima prefecture; president: Hisahiko Aoki). The name Shinchi Maru is derived from the location of this power plant.

Renewables Consulting Group Adds 2 Execs

Two executives from the renewables industry have been appointed by The Renewables Consulting Group (RCG) to oversee the firm’s day-to-day business, develop its global growth strategy and direct short- and long-term planning for the company. Sebastian Chivers has taken up the role of chief executive officer, and Dr. Lee Clarke as chief operating officer. The duo brings deep industry expertise, particularly in the areas of strategy and management, and together will spearhead the delivery of new, top-tier and cost-effective solutions for the consultancy’s clients, the group said.

East and South China Sea Disputes Need Creative Diplomacy

China and the United States appear headed for a damaging confrontation over the extent of China's territorial claims in the South and East China Seas. Now that China has become the world's largest importer of oil, and energy more generally, the country's need to develop more indigenous energy supplies has become urgent. Expecting China to put the South and East China Seas off limits to exploration and production until disputes over sovereignty can be resolved through some undefined legal or diplomatic process is unrealistic. Part of the problem is that western analysts and policymakers still fail to appreciate the strategic importance of these areas.

Dana Gas Receives $53m from Egypt

Dana Gas received from the Egyptian Government authorities $53m from the current total outstanding receivables of  $330m. Payment of $42 million has been received in US dollars and the balance in equivalent Egyptian pounds. Including this tranche, during 2013, Dana Gas has received a total of $130m from the Egyptian Government authorities. The Egyptian Government has committed to work with the company on a plan to repay the remainder of the outstanding receivables over an agreed time frame.
