ABS Published FSRU Development Guidance

ABS has published the ABS Guide for Building and Classing LNG Regasification Vessels, outlining guidance for classing LNG regasification vessels. “ABS has developed this industry-leading guidance based on extensive experience with the classification of LNG carriers,” says ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki. Floating LNG regasification uses specialized ships, commonly referred to as LNG regasification vessels or Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU), which offer a flexible and efficient way to deliver LNG to new and expanding markets.

SEA\LNG welcomes Two new Partners

SEA\LNG - which works to accelerate the widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel - has welcomed two new partners, each representing key aspects of the LNG maritime value chain. The recent decision by the International Maritime Organization Marine Environment Protection Committee to enforce the global 0.5% cap on the sulphur content of marine fuel by 2020 has significantly increased interest in LNG as a cost effective, safe and more environmentally friendly fuel. ABS to Class Two More Kogas LNG Carriers

ABS has been selected to class two Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGCs) for SK Shipping, featuring the KC-1 cargo containment system (CCS). The agreement brings to five the number of LNGCs to be built to joint ABS/KR class for Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS), the world's largest LNG importer. "ABS has a long association with South Korea's shipowners and shipbuilders and has supported them as they push the development of ships and systems to new levels of innovation and efficiency," says ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. ABS Spearheads Offshore Standardization JIP

ABS, a provider of classification services to the global offshore industry, has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Korean shipbuilders Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to establish a joint industry project (JIP) with operators, drilling contractors and engineering companies to develop new international design standards for offshore oil and gas projects. ABS Holds Meeting to Improve Offshore Equipment Safety

ABS recently convened the inaugural meeting of the ABS Offshore Equipment Advisory Committee, bring together a group of technical advisors on March 4, 2015, at the ABS Energy Corridor office to exchange information for rule development and enhancement of classification services for offshore equipment. One of the primary focuses of the committee is to gather information from offshore experts to guide changes and additions to publications such as the ABS Guide for the Classification of Drilling Systems, the classification society explained.

Two State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College professors have received a $65,000 grant from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to develop a program for inspecting underwater drilling equipment and gathering and maintaining information about its structural well being, all while the equipment remains in service and fully operational.
