Eco-friendly Power for Container Ships in Hamburg Port
Port of Hamburg is taking a further step toward improving air quality at its port. Innovative technology developed right here in the city is set to enable large and very large container ships to switch off their auxiliary diesel supplies during lay time and instead draw the power they need for on-board operations from a new kind of mobile generator.Becker Marine Systems, Hapag-Lloyd AG and Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) have been testing the new technology as part of a joint pilot project since the start of the year.
Innovative Cruise Ship Hosts LNG Conference
As part of the international trade conference "Making LNG Happen: Combining Forces for Sustainable Shipping," 80 representatives from the fields of business, politics and science visited the cruise ship AIDAprima in Rotterdam on Thursday, January 26, 2017. The guests included Dirk Brengelmann, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Netherlands and his Norwegian colleague Martin Sørby. Hosting the event onboard AIDAprima was symbolic and significant, AIDAprima was the first cruise ship in the world that uses a dual-fuel engine to produce its energy from LNG while docked at port.
Keel Laid for First LNG Hybrid Barge
The keel laying of the world’s first LNG hybrid barge took place at a ceremony held at the SAM Shipbuilding & Machinery shipyard in Komárno, Slovakia. In the presence of representatives of the shipyard, AIDA Cruises, Becker Marine Systems and Hybrid Port Energy (a subsidiary of Becker Marine Systems and the barge shipping company), the laying of the keel was carried out following the tradition of placing a coin on the keel block prior to lowering the first section.
