Mining Service Sector Outpaces Oil Peers

Miners' quest for technology adds to order books. Companies supplying miners with equipment and services have performed better than their oil sector peers, buoyed by spending on new technology and expectations the demand outlook for other minerals is more bullish than for fuel. The index of mining services companies, such as Atlas Copco , Sandvik and Metso, has risen more than 50 percent over the last 12 months. In contrast, the oil services index has barely moved as companies such as Saipem, Technip FMC and SBM Offshore grapple with the thinnest order books in 13 years.

Air Technologies Receives Energy Efficiency Award

Air Technologies, a key Atlas Copco distributor of compressed air solutions, has received a 2014 Energy Efficiency Top Producer Award from American Electric Power (AEP) Ohio. The company was ranked sixth for top energy savings with more than 5 million kWh hours saved, largely due to its long-standing partnership with Atlas Copco. The variable speed drive (VSD) compressor is one of the most energy-efficient compressor designs in the compressed air industry, and has been since its introduction in 1994.

Walking, 'talking' drilling rigs aim to modernize fracking

Schramm Inc, which built the drilling rig that four years ago helped rescue 33 trapped Chilean copper miners, has designed a 500,000-pound rig for the oil and natural gas industry that can walk, rotate 360 degrees, be operated with a remote control, and load pipe automatically.
