ABB Revolutionizes Battery Charger for All Trains

Most compact battery charger using groundbreaking silicon carbide power semiconduc­tor technology comes 80 percent lighter than previous generation. At the upcoming trade show InnoTrans in Berlin, Germany, September 20 to 23, ABB will launch a next generation battery charger based on silicon carbide (SiC) power semicon­ductors for use in all rail applications. Train batteries provide power for critical systems such as control and lighting. The new compact battery charger of the series, BORD­LINE® BC, complements ABB`s large stand-alone auxiliary converter product family and is compatible with all standard train battery voltages.

ABB's GIS Substation to boost Iraq's Power infrastructure

ABB has won an order worth around $100 million from Mass Global Holding to deliver a gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation that will help integrate 3,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity generated by a combined cycle power plant, utilizing Iraq’s natural gas resources. The government is rebuilding the country, investing in national housing programs and has ambitious plans for developing its power infrastructure to meet electricity needs. Applications for 2016 ABB Research Award

Applications are now being accepted for the international ABB Research Award in Honor of Hubertus von Gruenberg. A call for applications to be submitted by January 31, 2016 has been issued to post­graduates in the fields of power and automation at universities or research institutions. The award carries a US$ 300,000 personal research grant. With the grant money, ABB intends to provide the recipient with an opportunity to continue conducting advanced research in the chosen field, culminating in innovative results being presented to the international scientific and business communities.

Schiendorfer is ABB's Head of BMR

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has appointed Michael Schiendorfer as head of its Business Media Relations team focusing on financial and business topics, effective Aug. 1, 2015. He will report directly to Christoph Sieder, Head of ABB Group Corporate Communications. ABB substations For Swiss Railways

Zurich, Switzerland, April 20, 2015 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won orders worth around $30 million from the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), the national Swiss rail operator, and from the private Matterhorn Gotthard Railway to help boost power and increase capacity on one of the world’s most comprehensive and reliable rail networks. The order was booked in the first quarter of 2015. Three new traction substations being supplied by ABB will enable SBB and the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway to increase their capacity to meet rising traffic volume in southwestern and central Switzerland.

Gomtec to Drive ABB's Robotics Portfolio

ABB announced today acquired Gomtec GmbH to expand its offering in the field of collaborative robots. The parties agreed not to disclose financial terms of the transaction. Gomtec, based near Munich, Germany, is a privately held company that develops mechatronic systems combining mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, control and computer engineering for customers in diverse industries. It has 25 employees. Gomtec’s technology platform will strengthen ABB’s development of a new generation of “safe-by-design” collaborative robots that can be operated outside of cages or protective fencing…

ABB Tops list of Patent Applications

Zurich, Switzerland, February 26, 2015 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, registered more patent applications with the European Patent Office (EPO) than any other Swiss-based company in 2014. Switzerland remains top of the world rankings for the number of patents filed per million inhabitants. ABB filed 450 patent applications with the EPO last year, followed by Nestlé, Alstom, Roche and Novartis, reflecting its strong track record in technological innovation. ABB employs more than 8,500 researcher and developers around the world and every year invests around $1.5 billion in R&D.

ABB to Boost Fuel Efficiency of Pioneer Marine’s Vessels

Amarcon, an ABB Group company, today announced that the company will deliver SEEMP-compliant OCTOPUS-Onboard fuel monitoring systems for 12 Handysize bulk carriers that will be built by YangZhou GuoYu Shipbuilding Co., Ltd and delivered to the Singapore based owner Pioneer Marine Inc. in 2015 and 2016. The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) is an operational measure that establishes a mechanism to improve the energy efficiency of a ship in a cost-effective manner. It has been mandatory on all vessels since 2013.

ABB to Upgrade Sri Lanka's power infrastructure

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth about $40 million from Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to supply two new 220-kilovolt (kV) substations and upgrade an existing substation in Sri Lanka.The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2014. The new substations will be constructed at Polpitiya in the Central Province and Padukka near the capital, Colombo, in the Western Province, while the existing substation at Pannipitiya, a suburb of Colombo, will be augmented.The project is scheduled for completion in 2017.

ABB Commissions World Highest Capacity Circuit Breaker

ABB has designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned a 1,200-kilovolt (kV) circuit breaker the highest AC voltage level in the world. Once the 1200 kV ultrahigh-voltage switchgear is fully operational, it will have a switching capacity of 10,400 megawatts -  a switch capable of turning ‘ON’ or ‘OFF’ the electricity generated by 10 large power plants or the combined average annual electrical load of Switzerland and Denmark, within milliseconds. The circuit breaker is deployed at the 1,200 kV national test station constructed by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL)…

ABB WinsTunisia's Gas Treatment Plant Bid

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has been awarded a $216 million contract to deliver a gas treatment plant to the South Tunisian Gas Project (STGP).The order was awarded by OMV Tunisie Production GmbH, a subsidiary of Austrian energy group OMV, and was booked in the third quarter. ABB will be responsible for the turnkey delivery of the Nawara gas treatment plant (GTP) including gas separation and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) extraction units. It will also provide key automation, communications and power components, including the control system and transformers and switchgear for the electrification of the plant.

EMGS - Settlement of the Convertible Bond Loan to North Energy

Divestment fully in line with ABB’s commitment to continuous portfolio optimization. ABB has divested five businesses with limited synergies in the past 11 months raising about $1 billion. Zurich, Switzerland, August 20, 2014– ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced it has signed an agreement to divest the ABB Full Service business for an undisclosed amount. The sale is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2014, subject to regulatory approval. The ABB Full Service business provides fully outsourced industrial maintenance services.

ABB to Supply Cable for Offshore Wind Farm Extension in the UK

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth around $30 million from DONG Energy, a leading wind power development company, to supply a high-voltage export cable system that will transmit power from the Burbo Bank Extension Offshore Wind Farm in the UK. ABB’s project scope includes the design, engineering, supply and commissioning of the 25 kilometer (km) long 220 kilovolt (kV) AC (alternating current) submarine cable and the related offshore substation cable. ABB will also supply 32 km of AC underground cables and the associated substation cables as well as the cable joints…

ABB Wins $35 mln HVDC Upgrade Order in Canada

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth about $35 million from Hydro-Québec to upgrade the 350 megawatt (MW) Madawaska high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link, that connects the grids of New Brunswick and Hydro Québec in southeast Canada. The order was booked in the second quarter of 2014. The project scope includes installation of ABB’s MACH control and protection system and the upgrade of the valves and valve cooling system.
