Brazil to Turn off Some Thermal Plants

Posted by August 5, 2015

Brazil will turn off 2,000 megawatts of thermal power on Saturday as conditions improve for its hydropower system after recent rains, Energy Minister Eduardo Braga said on Wednesday.

Brazil, which mostly relies on hydropower, has had its more expensive natural gas-powered thermal plants running full throttle since a drought hit the southeast region three years ago. Braga said 10,000 megawatts would remain connected.
